Microsoft's announcement of Windows 8 represents a major change in the Windows development landscape, with the inclusion of HTML/CSS/JavaScript as first-class development languages for Windows "Metro" applications. OData, Open Data Protocol, is a web protocol for querying and updating data over HTTP using open web standards. In this session we will go over the details of how OData facilitates the consumption and publication of data. We will explain OData syntax and definitions. In the end we'll go over how to get started writing your OData service and how to consume open services in your own applications.

Vermont Code Camp, September 10th, 2011

Vermont Code Camp 2011 will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 8am–6pm at Kalkin Hall on the University of Vermont campus in Burlington, VT. This will be the third annual Vermont Code Camp.

Last year, 125 local nerds participated in the 2010 edition of Vermont Code Camp. Four rooms provided concurrent sessions on .NET, PHP, Ruby, Python, and more throughout the day. Two of the rooms had .NET topics and another had sessions on free/open source software. ASP.NET MVC 2 is a delightful read for anyone wanting to learn more about the Model View Controller (MVC) design pattern based on Microsoft technologies. The author, Steven Sanderson, first sets the groundwork for the example store application by explaining and demonstrating Test Driven Design methodology. This methodology is exercised in subsequent chapters as he explains and describes the core components of MVC with ASP.NET. Each core component chapter is given a thorough explanation; using the Repository design pattern and concentrating domain logic within the model layer, restricting domain logic and compartmentalizing common action behavior into filters within the controller layer, and composition of data into view models within the view layer. Furthermore, the author dives into the depths of the ASP.NET MVC processing pipeline, by discussing routing, controller discovery, action invocation, and view rendering. The book ends with deploying an ASP.NET MVC project and integration features with existing ASP.NET Platform features. An overall excellent book for anyone wanting to learn ASP.NET MVC, or brush up on their web application skills.

Software prototyping is an important UX design skill that many people “just do” but effective prototyping requires crucial knowledge and practices that aren’t obvious. In this talk, Everett will explain prototyping and its goals, compare prototyping to sketching, and explore the different types of prototyping. He will then characterize effective prototyping and explain why those characteristics are so important.

Everett will review several commonly available prototyping tools (including SketchFlow), and evaluate their pros and cons. He will conclude by working through some examples so that you can see effective prototyping in practice.

Everett McKay is the principal of UX Design Edge, a user experience design training and consulting firm specializing in helping non-designers based in St. Albans, Vermont.

It is with great sadness that TVUG notes the passing of Mike Tommaney. Mike was a friend and colleague for many years and he will be missed. Mike had been with VersaTrans (now Tyler) for over 20 years and the success of their product line was due in a large part to his skill and dedication. Mike was proud of his Irish heritage and if he had been writing this about someone else, he would have ended this with "Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann".

Have you ever had an idea for an application or been asked to create a prototype for your boss or a client? You could start up Photoshop and layout detailed graphics for each screen or open your favorite IDE and create a prototype by writing code. However, there is a better and faster way to create dynamic prototype and that is to use Sketchflow within Microsoft's Expression Blend.
In this session, Shawn will walk us through the steps of creating "sketchy" prototypes in quick and simple fashion.

Presenter Bio:

Shawn Gwin has been professionally coding for over 16 years. He has worked on a variety of platforms from the As/400 to the latest .NET frameworks. He currently works for 6N Systems as a Senior Software Engineer and lives in the sticks of Washington county with his wife, two kids and two dogs..

You have Silverlight on Windows Phone 7 under control, but what about XNA? If you're looking to create a more advanced game with better performance than Silverlight, XNA is the platform for you. In this session, developers will learn how to build an XNA game targeted for Windows Phone 7. The basics of the platform will be demonstrated while building a simple Space Invaders-type game that would be Marketplace acceptable. Specifically, this session will cover how to deal with user input, play sound effects and music, display animated 2D graphics, and how to create a game that's ready to be sold on the Marketplace.

You will learn:

The basics of XNA development on Windows Phone 7
How to handle user input on the device
How to play sound effects and music
How to 2D display graphics
How to package it all up into a game ready to be sold

Presenter Bio:

Brian is a Microsoft C# MVP who has been actively developing in .NET since its early betas in 2000, and who has been developing solutions using Microsoft technologies and platforms for even longer. Along with .NET, Brian is particularly skilled in the languages of C, C++ and assembly language for a variety of CPUs. He is also well-versed in a wide variety of technologies including web development, document imaging, GIS, graphics, game development, and hardware interfacing. Brian has co-authored the book "Coding4Fun: 10 .NET Programming Projects for Wiimote, YouTube, World of Warcraft, and More" published O'Reilly. He previously co-authored the book "Debugging ASP.NET" published by New Riders. Brian is also an author for MSDN's Coding4Fun website.

We are looking for very sharp, cross-functional developers with Microsoft .NET development experience. You will be working with a team of people who are developers at the core and display passion for their work. The ability to work independently and in a team is a must.

* Initial phase of work (3-6 months) will require work on-site in Norwich / New Berlin / Hamilton area - expenses will be covered. Subsequent work will be on-site in Albany.

Required Skills:
